Safety Belts on Buses - New Details being released shortly

Release to: Coach Journals
Date: July 2010
Title: Safety Belts on Buses - New Details will be release shortly

We have been advised that information regarding upcoming changes to the roadworthiness test for buses fitted with safety belts will be sent to all bus owners in early August and sets out the verification exercise which will take place from the 29 October 2010 on all buses fitted with safety belts.

The safety belt verification exercise requires a bus owner to provide, at the roadworthiness test, certification to show the safety belts fitted to their vehicle are of an acceptable standard.  Included is advice for bus owners on how they will get the appropriate certification for their vehicle and examples of what this certification may look like.  This certification can then be used in conjunction with a completed owner declaration form to fulfil the requirements of the verification exercise.

A bus fitted with safety belts and without such documentation will not pass its roadworthiness test from the end of October this year.

The owner declaration form will be verified by the Authorised Tester at the vehicles roadworthiness test and will be returned to the bus owner for use as proof of the verification exercise having taken place.  A copy will be retained on file by the Vehicle Testing Centre.  A completed owner declaration form can also be used as proof of a vehicle having a certified safety belt installation.  Bus owners are advised they will need such proof if engaged in the organised transport of children after October 2011.
